Mitchell Hall of Famer Josh Ford hired as New London girls basketball coach

Josh Ford is so fired up to be the new head coach for the New London girls basketball team that it's almost all he talks about with friends these days, and he already spends much of his free time watching game film from last season.
"I'm in awe of getting this job. I am taking it all in and ready to get started," Ford said. "There is so much potential for success here. I have coached some of these girls in middle school and they looked good over the summer in tournaments."

Ford's path to the job includes a season as an assistant under former New London girls coach Tammy Millsaps in 2024-25, a stint as Ledyard's assistant boys basketball coach under DJ Exum last winter, and serving as New London's assistant boys volleyball coach.
He first came to the New London area as a student at Mitchell College, where he played basketball and graduated in 2015.
"When I got here, the girls basketball team was a powerhouse that was either winning or competing for a state championship every season," Ford said. "We want to be at that level every season. We lost a few girls from last season and need new girls to step up, and I think they will."
New London appeared in four CIAC finals from 2014-19, winning titles in 2014 and 2017. The Whalers also won Class MM in 2023.
They competed in Division II last season. The divisions for girls basketball have not been released for the 2026-27 season.
Ford takes over for Keyokah Mars-Garrick, who guided the Whalers to an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I tournament title in her lone season before leaving to become head coach at Stonington. The Whalers went 13-6 in the regular season and lost 65-60 to eventual D-II runner-up Rocky Hill in the second round.
A Mitchell College Athletic Hall of Famer, Ford finished his career with 1,749 points and 1,057 rebounds, earning New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Year honors in 2013 and 2014.
Ford holds a bachelor's degree in sport and fitness management from Mitchell and a master's degree in education from Sacred Heart. He teaches special education at Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School in New London, where he got his coaching start.
