The defending NCAA champs announced this season's slate on Friday, Sept. 4. The 13-game stretch includes three exhibitions, three games in NBA arenas and a handful of big-time opponents in the first season under new coach Mike Boynton Jr.
Michigan opens its exhibition run by hosting Eastern Michigan on Oct. 11 and then Oregon State – which hired former U-M assistant Justin Joyner in the offseason – on Oct. 16. The Wolverines then wrap up the preseason with a short road trip, facing playing perennial power Houston at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids on Oct. 25.
The regular-season opener, as it was last year, is against Oakland, as the Golden Grizzlies and legendary coach Greg Kampe will visit in Ann Arbor on Nov. 2. The highlight of the nonconference schedule comes soon after that: an NCAA Tournament championship game rematch against UConn in Boston on Nov. 6.
Michigan also has games at home against Big East contender Marquette and a technically neutral-site clash with Villanova in Philadelphia, at the home of the NBA's 76ers.
U-M hosts William & Mary between those two games.
The Wolverines will then head to Las Vegas to defend their the Players Era Championship championship, opening with Creighton on Nov. 24 and then playing either Miami or TCU on Nov. 26.
They will have a third game in the tournament (against Alabama, Baylor, Gonzaga or Kansas State) the next day and should they go 3-0, they would play in the title game on Nov. 28. If they’re not in the title game, they will host Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 1 back in Ann Arbor.
That leads into the final high-major matchup of the non-conference, against Louisville at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Dec. 5.
Michigan then squeezes in two Big Ten games over the next two weeks (against opponents yet to be announced) before wrapping up its nonconference slate against Detroit Mercy on Dec. 21 and Toledo on Dec. 30.
