John Schreiber has gone from last place to a pennant race.
The Gibraltar Carlson graduate was placed on waivers on Monday Aug. 31 by the Kansas City Royals and claimed by the New York Yankees.

The Royals were mired in last place in the American League Central while the Yankees are chasing Tampa Bay for first place in the American League East and firmly entrenched in a wild-card position.
It was a cost-saving move for Kansas City. The Yankees reportedly will pick up about $600,000 of Schreiber’s $3.715 million salary for 2026.
Schreiber posted a 3.65 earned-run average over 55 relief appearances for the Royals.
Schreiber began his college career at Henry Ford Community College before transferring to Northwestern Ohio.
He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2016 and made his Major League debut with the team in 2019.
He was claimed off waivers by Boston in Feb. of 2021, then traded to Kansas City for David Sandlin on Feb. 17, 2024.
Over eight seasons and more than 300 innings in Major League Baseball, Schreiber has a 16-15 record, 13 saves and a 3.64 ERA.

Duran, Ansel perfect
MONROE – Levi Duran and Dekker Ansel both pitched shutout to lead Monroe to a 7-1 win over St. Mary Catholic Central on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
Duran won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Ansel did the same at No. 4.
Monroe dropped a total of just three games in singles with Brayden Swearengin and Jayce Eshleman also recording dominant wins.
SMCC’s point came at No. 4 doubles from Ethan Gawel and Nolan Massengill.
PREP VOLLEYBALL
Ida spreads wealth
CLINTON – Libbie Wolfenbarger notched18 kills and Karlee Walentowski, Hadley Bogden, and Ella Taylor added 15 each as Ida went 3-1 in Lenawee County Athletic Association Pool Play Tuesday.
“After coming off of a rough weekend at Bedford, I was proud of the girls for showing up tonight and taking care of business,” Ida coach Ashley Begeman said.
Hadley Bogden (36 assists), Alex Haws (20 digs), Alli Schrader (19 digs) and Madelynn Roderick (11 blocks) also played well for the Blue Streaks.
Dundee also was 3-1 with its only loss coming against Ida.
Leaders for the Vikings were Mckenzie Heath (25 kills, 9 blocks), Sophia Nolff (20 kills, 31 digs), Leah Evans (45 digs), Aubrey Federer (68 assists) and Delaney Ostrowski (8 aces).
Milestone for Jones
TEMPERANCE – Josslyn Jones reached 1,000 career assists as Monroe went 2-3 in the Bedford End of Summer Tournament Saturday.
Briley Lechner recorded 29 kills for the Trojans.
PREP SWIMMING
Monroe freshman shines
ERIE – Freshman Karis Beaton won both of her events with times that qualified for the Michigan Interscholastic Swimming Coaches meet to lead Monroe to wins over Erie Mason-Ida 134-52 and Tecumseh 136-43 Tuesday.
Sophia Smith and Ava Dowen each also won twice as Monroe finished first in 11 of the 12 events.
Mason-Ida beat Tecumseh 99-76. With Meridth Hasley, Addy Oberhaus and Alexis Etue scoring the most points for the Eagles.
McNamara lifts Flat Rock
BELLEVILLE – Aileen McNamara won the 200 and 500 freestyle and swam on a winning relay to lead Flat Rock to wins over Belleville 87-83 and Ypsilanti Lincoln 117-56 Tuesday.
Other standouts were Vanessa Neace, Emma Sparks and Arianna Farane.
CROSS COUNTRY
Mason boys second
ADDISON – Porter Ravary took eighth place to lead Erie Mason’s boys to a runner-up finish in the Addison Kuenner Invitational Tuesday.
Caleb Healey and David Mills were 12th and 15th, respectively, for the Eagles.
Mason didn’t field a full girls team, but Jaelynn Horton ran 18th.
