Sunderland are poised to secure the signing of central defender Kevin Danso on loan with an obligation to buy from Tottenham Hotspur on deadline day of the 2026 summer transfer window.

Recently, reports emerged outlining that Spurs had rejected Sunderland’s first loan bid for Danso, but now the transfer appears to have been given the green light.
Hours before midnight on deadline day, BBC Sport reporter Sami Mokbel revealed that the Black Cats are set to complete the loan capture of Danso after the two clubs reopened talks over the deal.
Now, Danso will move to the Stadium of Light outfit on deadline day, and according to Fabrizio Romano on X, Sunderland have a near £25m obligation to buy after the season-long loan deal for the Austrian international permanent in next year’s summer window.
Danso, who the London outfit signed from RC Lens for £20.9m last year, seemed resigned to little starting contention under Roberto De Zerbi, but it was understood that Spurs needed to have a replacement for the 27-year-old lined up to sanction his exit.
With Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo set to move from Stamford Bridge to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on deadline day, this deal has unlocked Danso’s switch to Sunderland, with the defender already agreeing to personal terms with the Black Cats hierarchy.
Central defender Danso is poised to undergo a medical before putting pen to paper at the Stadium of Light and become the club’s third signing of the summer window, following the signings of left-back Dayann Methalie from Toulouse and veteran defender Thomas Meunier as a free agent following his exit from Lille.

From Sunderland’s perspective, the addition of Danso to Regis Le Bris’ squad ticks many transfer boxes.
Danso was part of the Tottenham squad who lifted the Europa League trophy last year under Ange Postecoglou, and this experience at the elite level of European football will be a substantial benefit for Sunderland this season.
On the field, the Austrian is an assured defender, akin to Sunderland star Dan Ballard in his physical nature and as a fantastic box defender both with his feet and head, which will suit the Black Cats’ playstyle perfectly.
It appears that De Zerbi believes Danso is not capable enough in terms of progressing possession from the back to warrant a starting role in his Spurs side, but with Sunderland not being a possession-oriented side, this would hopefully see Le Bris enjoy the stellar defensive attributes that the former RC Lens player has to offer without having to worry too much about his on-ball shortcomings.
Danso adds strength in depth in a pivotal position, experience in both the Premier League and European competition, and excellent defensive qualities to Sunderland in what is a shrewd bit of business from the Black Cats.
