Team USA had to change up its roster on the fly after superstars A’ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum withdrew from international play. To plug the massive hole in the frontcourt, USA Basketball brought in Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron as replacements to keep the machine running.
There’s a lot of expectation on Team USA, especially considering how dominant they were at the last FIBA World Cup. In the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup, Team USA went undefeated and crushed China 83-61 in the final to seal their fourth consecutive gold medal.
However, given the two big absences, there’s a lot more pressure on the likes of Caitlin Clark to deliver.
Caitlin Clark tipped to win FIBA World Cup MVP award
With A’ja Wilson dropping out of the FIBA World Cup, it’ll be up to the likes of Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers and others to carry the scoring load.
However, it seems as if supporters believe that Clark will do most of the heavy lifting, with 70% voting for her to secure the TISSOT FIBA World Cup MVP award here.
Marine Johannes is second with 17% of the vote and Paige Bueckers in third with just 3%.
It was A’ja Wilson who won the TISSOT MVP award at the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup after leading Team USA to the gold medal with 17.2 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
