The Tennessee Titans are looking to take somewhat of a step forward under Robert Saleh in his first year as head coach. However, it will not be easy, as they still have a young roster that they hope will mature as the season progresses.
On Sunday, Tennessee had to make several decisions, just like the rest of the league. The Titans finally cut ties with Will Levis in a move that felt overdue.
“Will Levis was at one time the hopeful future of the Tennessee Titans at quarterback, but that time has passed and he's leaving Nashville. The No. 33 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Levis is being waived by Tennessee, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday. The team later announced the news,” NFL.com’s Grant Gordon wrote.
The move to release Levis seemed to open the door for former Tennessee Volunteer Hendon Hooker.
“Tennessee Football legend Hendon Hooker looked to have made the Tennessee Titans' 53-man roster, but that wouldn't be the case. The former Volunteer quarterback was going to survive a crowded quarterback room to earn his spot on the roster after it seemed he notably beat out former Kentucky Wildcat and 2nd-round pick Will Levis to make the roster,” SI’s Major Passons wrote.
However, that was far from the reality. Tennessee also decided to move on from Hooker, releasing two quarterbacks on the same day. It was a surprising move, and one that SI’s Caleb Sisk called a joke.
“The Titans ended up cutting Hendon Hooker anyways… what a joke,” Sisk posted.
The Titans will likely try to sign Hooker to the practice squad if he clears waivers, but it is risky to have only one backup quarterback on the roster. Tennessee is in an interesting position heading into the regular season.
Hooker has made $3 million in his career so far. He also had a solid preseason, which is another factor in why this decision was perceived as shocking. Despite his performance, the Titans ultimately decided to move in a different direction at quarterback.
