The celebration that follows NFL cutdown day can be deceiving. Players who survive the league's annual roster purge have every reason to feel proud. Months of offseason workouts, training camp practices, joint sessions, and preseason games culminate in a coveted spot on the Philadelphia Eagles' initial 53-man roster.
The keywords, however, are initial roster. As a result, several Eagles who survived cutdown day may find themselves operating with very little margin for error. Hundreds of free agents will be available. There's the waiver process and, eventually, practice squads that teams can purge for talent. The challenge becomes even greater on a team with legitimate playoff aspirations. Make note. Competition didn't conclude because the preseason did.

Contenders don't always have the luxury of carrying developmental or struggling players indefinitely if immediate upgrades become available. Every roster spot must justify itself. Every game-day inactive list becomes a reminder that competition never truly ends. That reality is especially true for players who won jobs by narrow margins, veterans whose roles remain undefined, or younger players who still have significant development ahead of them.
Andy Dalton & Tanner McKee, quarterbacks
Four QBs make the initial 53-man roster. The battle for the backup role continues between two of them, and maybe we should have expected this. Sean Mannion did promise this competition would continue until the regular season began.

Elijah Moore, wide receiver
Okay, we know the top four wide receivers on the Eagles' roster are DeVonta Smith, Dontayvion Wicks, Makai Lemon, and Hollywood Brown. If Darius Cooper didn't play in the preseason finale and Moore did, are we to assume Cooper is WR5, making Moore WR6?
We'll chew on that for a while. In the meantime, theory says the Eagles aren't done working. That said, if any additional roster additions are to be made, Philadelphia may shave a guy from the six-man wide receiver corps.
Arnold Ebiketie and A.J. Epenesa, edge rushers
The Eagles placed TE Grant Calcaterra and CB Jakorian Bennett on the reserve/injured list but also designated them for return. They must miss at least the first four games to start the season, but who do they replace if that happens? What if the Eagles claim someone off waivers? What if Philadelphia raids someone's practice squad?
Arnold Ebiketie and A.J. Espebesa are on the roster, but they seem less safe than guys who have gained trust at other positions like Byron Young and Smael Mondon. That said, place an asterisk by their names for now, as this portion of the list may be subject to change.
Worth mentioning: Each player on the 53-man roster earned the opportunity. There's no denying that. All should be commended for their efforts, but none of the above necessarily earned long-term security. The Eagles have built one of the NFL's deepest rosters, but depth creates pressure as much as it creates strength.
The standard inside the Jefferson Health Training Complex remains high, and Roseman has never been reluctant to continue searching for answers after roster cutdowns have passed. Making the initial 53-man roster is an important accomplishment.
For some Eagles, however, the next few weeks may determine whether that accomplishment becomes a season-long opportunity or merely a brief stop before the next roster move arrives.
