South Africa’s passport – affectionately nicknamed the ‘Green Mamba‘ – has had a mixed year on the world stage, and the full picture is more complicated than a simple ranking number suggests.

According to the 2026 Henley Passport Index, South Africa’s passport now offers visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 101 destinations, down from 106 the year before.
That’s a real drop in access, driven by the loss of visa-free entry to five countries.
All of Pakistan, Mauritania, Nigeria, Kosovo and Somalia are no longer visa-free destinations for South African travellers.
Came at a cost
Here’s the twist: losing access to those five countries came at a real cost.
South Africa’s overall global ranking dropped two places to 50th, down from 48th the year before, according to Henley’s own official database.
It’s a reminder that rankings measure relative standing against every other passport in the world, not just your own country’s raw numbers, so losing ground on access can cost you ground on rank too, especially when other countries are actively climbing at the same time.
Why this still matters for your next trip
The bigger picture painted by this year’s Henley report is one of growing global mobility inequality.
Countries actively negotiating visa waivers and reciprocal agreements keep climbing, while those that don’t fall behind, and analysts are also flagging deepening bias against African travellers in recent EU visa reform proposals.
Eish, it’s actually a bit of a mixed bag this year, hey, fewer doors opened by the Green Mamba than 12 months ago, and we lost ground in the rankings too.
