MIAMI — Adley Rutschman is not in the Red Sox lineup for a second straight game Wednesday.

He sat out Tuesday due to irritation in his right elbow.
First baseman Willson Contreras also is not in the lineup. Nick Sogard will play first.
“He definitely is better today, which is good,” interim manager Chad Tracy said about Rutschman. “But if he’s not like, ‘Hey, I feel completely fully recovered,’ why would you do that? Use today plus the off day ... to try to get completely on the other side of this thing and hopefully be able to turn him loose in New York. So hope we’re trending that way.
“But it just didn’t make a lot of sense to me today to try to risk putting him out there and let him take one more swing and do something,” Tracy added. “So we just let him be off today and we’ll reassess him after the off day.”
Connor Wong will catch Red Sox starter Sonny Gray when Boston faces the Marlins at 6:40 p.m. ET at LoanDepot Park.
Gray and Wong have worked well together anyway and the veteran right-handed pitcher likes to throw to Wong.
The Red Sox are off Thursday before beginning a four-game series in New York vs. the Yankees on Friday. That includes a doubleheader Saturday.
Rutschman initially experienced the irritation after “a really aggressive swing” Monday.
Rutschman, who Boston acquired from the Orioles at the Aug. 3 trade deadline, was on the 10-day injured list from July 20 through Aug. 11 due to left wrist inflammation.
Contreras has been playing through and managing soreness in his leg.
“With just various leg things that he’s dealt with, being able to give him a day today plus tomorrow — work with the medical staff today and try to get his legs in the best place possible prior to New York — was important as well,” Tracy said.
