Two dead, 12 injured in Eastern Cape head-on crash

At least two people have been killed and 12 passengers injured in a head-on collision in the Eastern Cape.

The accident occurred along Black Road in Gompo, Duncan Village, on Monday evening, 24 August 2026.
Head-on crash
Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Makhaya Komisa said a Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Quantum were involved in the fatal crash.
“One occupant of the Toyota Corolla, including its driver, was declared dead at the scene. The two vehicles were travelling from opposite directions.
“The Toyota Quantum with passengers was travelling from Gompo towards Qonce, while the Toyota Corolla had only two occupants (both allegedly males),” Komisa said.
Injured passengers
Komisa said the 12 injured passengers from the Toyota Quantum sustained various injuries during the crash while the driver escaped unharmed.
“The injured occupants were rushed to Cecilia Makhiwane and Frere Hospitals for further medical examination. It is alleged that reckless and negligent driving were the main contributing factors to the crash.”
Komisa said the South African Police Service (Saps) have opened a culpable homicide case, with reckless driving alleged as the cause.
Joburg crash
Last week, a truck driver was killed and three occupants of a sedan injured when a Volvo suffered a tyre blowout and ploughed across lanes on the N1 North in Johannesburg, triggering a violent collision that left the highway strewn with wreckage.
The accident occurred on Thursday at about 4:50pm on the N1 North between Beyers Naudé Drive and Malibongwe Drive in Randpark Ridge.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s (JMPD) spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, said that, according to preliminary investigation reports, both involved vehicles were travelling northbound along the N1 highway.
Fihla said the first vehicle, a white Volvo truck, was travelling in the slow lane, and the second vehicle, a grey Honda Ballade sedan, was travelling in the second lane from the right.
