Penn State's Drew Allar Reveals What He Needs to Improve on With Steelers

Former Penn State quarterback Drew Allar showed a lot of good in his first preseason game, but as some expected, things weren't all sunshine and rainbows in the second contest of his NFL career.

As many Penn State fans remember, there have been times when Allar looks like a really good quarterback, and others that suggest he's just about average. The Pittsburgh Steelers are hopeful they can develop him into a legitimate option, though he'll have to keep improving on all fronts. Allar also understands that he's far from where he needs to be, and the Steelers do too.
While Pittsburgh has been impressed with what he's done, that doesn't guarantee he'll even have a chance to play in the near future.
Speaking to reporters about his second game, which was very different from his first, Allar said he needs to do a better job earlier in drives of taking what defenses give him, despite making some really good throws and impressing on other fronts.
That's something that he was essentially forced to do at Penn State because of how boring its offense was under James Franklin, and while Allar has the ability to make that big throw and change a game with one pass, it's also important to just get his confidence up and take what's given early on.
"I just need to do a better job, especially early in drives, taking what's given," Allar said, per ESPN. "I felt like I passed up a couple opportunities early in drives that either set us back with an incompletion or a sack that if I just take what's there, even if it's catch tackle, we're not in a backed-up situation. I felt like that's where I could help the offense more."
Young players like Allar are going to have to learn the ways of the NFL, and he's going to eventually adjust to that. It's not easy coming into this league and finding instant success, so for him to even recognize that he needs to do some things better is a step in the right direction.
He needs more experience and other things that everybody should understand at this stage of his development. Remember, this could take a long time, so the fact that there are some promising signs early on is a good sign.
"I think that's a little bit just getting more experience and more reps in a gamelike environment," Allar said. "Practice we have to play clocks, but obviously you're not going to get penalized in practice. So having that stress element in a game, O-line did a great job of communicating up front with me. They did a great job of getting in and out of the huddle as well."
