Four arrested in fatal shooting of boxing champion Zolani ‘Last Born’ Tete

Eastern Cape MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Xolile Nqatha, has welcomed the swift arrest of four suspects allegedly linked to the fatal shooting of former World Boxing Champion Zolani “Last Born” Tete.
Tete was murdered outside his home in Mdantsane, KuGompo City, on Friday.

Arrests
Police made a series of arrests on Saturday and Sunday, in KuGompo City, Mdantsane, and Scenery Park. The suspects are aged 22, 27, 27, and 28.
The 22‑year‑old has been formally charged with murder and attempted murder and is scheduled to appear before the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Attempted murder
The attempted murder charge relates to a 27‑year‑old female passenger wounded in the attack, who remains hospitalised. A 30‑year‑old man initially apprehended has since been released and is regarded as a potential witness.
According to SAPS, more arrests are imminent as investigators pursue additional leads.
“These arrests once more serve as a clear demonstration that anyone committing a crime in this province will be apprehended and held accountable for their actions,” Nqatha said.
He added that the swift action should pave the way for a successful prosecution, bringing justice and closure to the Tete family.
Anguish
Family members voiced their anguish over the killing.
“We do not know why someone would be so heartless,” relatives said, describing their shock at the loss of the former champion.
Police confirmed that the investigation continues, with officers following up on leads. The MEC commended the work of the SAPS, saying the arrests highlight the commitment to ensuring accountability.

Tete’s death has sent shockwaves through Mdantsane and the wider sporting community. Known as “Last Born,” he rose to prominence as a world champion and remained a respected figure in his hometown.
