Television personality Melissa Grelo, a mainstay of CTV’s “The Social,” is leaving the show as it retools its format as a video podcast for its 14th season.
Bell Media announced the new format of the show will be filmed in Toronto without a studio audience.
‘Time to move on’
In a social media post , Grelo said “it is time to move on to a new chapter” after 13 seasons of “The Social” and 18 years with Bell Media.
“It’s hard to put 13 seasons into words,” Grelo wrote. “This show has been one of the great privileges of my career. Thirteen seasons of laughter, unforgettable moments and, most importantly, the chance to sit beside women I deeply admire and love.
“But I always believed that when the world around you is changing, you can either hold tightly to what has been, or get curious about what comes next,” she added.
Grelo said she’s been building the next phase of her life over the past few years, which includes her health and wellness podcast, “ Aging Powerfully with Melissa Grelo .” She said an “incredible community” has grown around it, which helped her discover a new way of connecting with people.
The 49-year-old said the way “we create, consume and connect through media” is changing dramatically, and she sees a new opportunity to “create and produce differently, to own more of the stories I tell, and to build experiences that can live far beyond the traditional boundaries of television.”
Grelo thanked her audience for tuning in every day for 18 years.
“You gave me 18 incredible years, I will never take that for granted,” Grelo wrote. “Thank you, Canada, for cheering me on through every stage of the journey.
“I hope you will continue to join me as I turn the page, to look ahead at Aging Powerfully, and on making this next chapter the most exciting one yet.”
New format to stream on YouTube
Bell Media said in a release that “The Social” is currently on hiatus and will return on Sept. 9 in its new format.
The show will be streamed live on YouTube at 1 p.m., with an immediate broadcast of the recorded one-hour show on CTV at 2 p.m. ET.
Jess Allen, Andrea Bain and Cynthia Loyst will continue to host “The Social.”
“The Social” executive producer Laura Scarfo said transitioning the daytime show to a video podcast will allow it “to expand and reach Canadian and international audiences on the platform of their choice.”
