NFR Celebrates 80th Independence Day With Focus On Safety, Connectivity And Growth

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) celebrated the Nation’s 80th Independence Day with patriotic fervour across its jurisdiction on 15th August, 2026. At the main celebration held at the NFRSA Complex, Maligaon, Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, General Manager of NFR, hoisted the National Flag in the presence of senior railway officials, staff and their family members and received the Guard of Honour. In his address, the General Manager paid tribute to the nation’s freedom fighters and brave soldiers and acknowledged the dedication of railway personnel working round the clock. On the occasion, 25 railway personnel were conferred with the Karmveer Puraskar, along with citations and cash rewards, for exemplary service and contribution, followed by a colourful cultural programme. As part of the celebrations, the GM also inaugurated the renovated Subir Raha Memorial Auditorium, newly constructed classrooms, a new Prayer Shed and upgraded facade at Netaji Vidyapeeth Railway Higher Secondary School. Highlighting NFR’s major achievements during 2026, the GM reiterated that safety remains the foremost priority under the guiding philosophy of ‘100% Safety, Zero Risk’. NFR strengthened safety through modern signalling and advanced technologies, improved monitoring of trains, tracks and critical infrastructure, elimination of Level Crossing Gates and commissioning of new Foot Over Bridges. More than 130 electric locomotives have been upgraded with KAVACH, along with installation of 30 Hot Box Detectors and three Automatic Train Examination Systems. Passenger connectivity also received a major boost with the introduction of 14 pairs of new train services, including the Vande Bharat Sleeper, Amrit Bharat and other Mail/Express trains. Besides, 674 trips of special trains services were rendered to meet additional passenger demand. India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express from Kamakhya and the first MEMU service between Agartala and Karimganj marked significant milestones in providing modern and improved rail connectivity to the Northeast.
NFR also recorded encouraging growth in business and freight performance. During April-July 2026, apportioned earnings reached Rs. 2,744 Cr, registering 8% growth over the corresponding period of the previous year, while ticket-checking earnings grew by 37%. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway crossed the Rs. 18 crore mark, its highest ever for the period. Freight infrastructure was augmented with seven new freight terminals and two Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals at Habaipur and Baihata. The first ever container train from India reached Nepal in July 2026, marking an important milestone in cross-border freight transportation. Track linking between Jogighopa Railway Station Yard and the Jogighopa Multi Modal Logistics Park was also completed, paving the way for integration of rail connectivity with the logistics hub.
Infrastructure development, electrification and sustainability also remained key focus areas, with NFR commissioning 23.7 MWp of solar power capacity during January-July 2026, the highest among all Zones of Indian Railways. During the period, four redeveloped Amrit Stations of NFR i.e. Kamakhyaguri, Majbat, Jalpaiguri Road and Haldibari were inaugurated by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, providing upgraded passenger amenities and modern station infrastructure. The GM also lauded Team NFR’s extraordinary resilience in restoring the flood-affected tracks at Simaluguri within just 17 days, with more than 700 railway personnel working round the clock, while sustained restoration efforts continued at New Harangajao. Appreciating the contribution of RPF, Bharat Scouts & Guides, sportspersons, railway employees and other stakeholders, he reaffirmed NFR’s commitment to safer, modern, efficient and sustainable rail transportation and to the national vision of ‘Viksit Bharat @ 2047’.
