Former Arizona senator Kyrsten Sinema has admitted to having sexual relations with her former bodyguard, Matthew Ammel, on many occasions.

The details of their affair come five months after Sinema admitted to the tryst in a motion filed to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Ammel’s ex-wife, Heather Ammel.

In January, Heather sued Sinema under the alienation of affection law in North Carolina. She argued that Sinema “willfully and intentionally” seduced Ammel, her husband of 14 years.

Heather is seeking more than US$75,000 in damages.

In a July 31 deposition, Sinema admitted that she had sex with her then-married bodyguard multiple times, according to court filings, per People .

While not denying the affair, the former senator did argue that she shouldn’t be sued in North Carolina, as the affair didn’t happen in the state.

‘We were outside. Matt kissed me’

Sinema testified that she first had sex with Ammel in 2024 while they stayed at an Airbnb around Memorial Day.

“We were staying at an Airbnb in Napa, Calif.,” Sinema said. “We were outside. Matt kissed me. We went inside and had sex.”

The sexual relations continued a month later in New York City while the then-senator attended the wedding of CNN anchor Jessica Dean. Sinema said that she and Ammel had separate hotel rooms during the trip, and that they were “intimate” in her room.

The affair continued during the summer months and into autumn. Sinema said she had sex with Ammel again in July at her Washington, D.C., apartment, again during a trip to Aspen, Colo., in August, and later at her house in Phoenix, Ariz., in October.

Sinema testified that throughout the illicit relationship she was aware Ammel was married and had children, per People .

What they said in their texts

A lawyer asked Sinema during the deposition about a series of text messages she sent to Ammel. Among the texts included a picture of herself in a towel with cupping marks on her body.

Sinema claimed she didn’t remember sending the text, but she did hint that the conversation must have been “about sports,” noting she was an endurance athlete.

In October 2024, another text was sent to her bodyguard: “Putting my hand on my heart. I’ll see you soon. I miss you.”

The former senator was asked if she knew why “a wife reading this might get concerned about who is sending her husband that kind of message.”

“Yes,” Sinema stated.

In the deposition, Heather said Ammel was an “established liar and manipulator.” In a text message sent to Ammel in June 2024, Heather said Sinema was an “insidious” woman who was “willing to break up a family.”

Up next will be an evidentiary hearing on Aug. 19, which will follow the depositions.
