With the Red Wings GM search looking to extend close to or into training camp, the team finds itself burning the candle at both ends with the season opener in just over a month and a half. The Red Wings free agents, restricted and unrestricted, are still waiting on new contracts.

Meanwhile, fans continue to grow restless without a clear direction for the franchise, with several questions looming on the horizon for the team. The window of opportunity to keep things calm is shrinking as the days drag on, with now-former captain Dylan Larkin’s trade request making projecting the season a nightmare.

Two months since news of Larkin’s trade ask was revealed, two of the teams on his list have effectively removed themselves from contention for the disgruntled center. Now, the team and whatever prospective GM takes the job has fewer teams to make the trade with and more calls to make as a three-team deal becomes the most likely course of action.

With training camp now just under a month away, the Red Wings will need to find out, from an on-and off-ice perspective, how to plan for Larkin.

If he plays, the team will want to protect him to maintain his trade value while making sure any off-ice negotiations don’t take a further toll on the on-ice product. If he doesn’t play, the team will be missing its top center and a perennial 30+ goal-scoring center.

Unfortunately, that means more of the same for fans as the franchise asks them to exercise their patience while the team transitions leadership in the GM chair and on the bench. It’s likely to be a bumpy ride, but once the Red Wings get there, we should all hopefully be able to breathe a sigh of relief.

Eddie Genborg, one of the Red Wings’ top prospects after a standout debut season last year in the SHL, is still recovering from injury and has not yet been cleared for full contact, according to Swedish reporter Jimmy Hamrin of HockeySverige and EliteProspects.

The 19-year-old forward had a brief appearance with the Grand Rapids Griffins at the tail end of last season but had his postseason cut short after an injury in his first playoff game on May 2. Genborg’s hard-hitting style and scoring touch shot him up the Red Wings’ prospect list after potting 25 points in 43 games for Timra IK in the top Swedish League.
