Forgive Green Bay Packers fans for being overly excited about a preseason field goal.

Remember, the last time the Packers were on the field, their kicker was missing key kicks in a playoff game, a recurring storyline over the last several seasons.

That performance by Brandon McManus led to Packers fans having plenty of choice words on social media over their kicker.

The Packers, not surprisingly, went their separate ways with McManus in the offseason. Enter rookie Trey Smack, the first pick by the Packers of a kicker since the franchise selected Mason Crosby in 2007.

And while it's only the preseason, fans are loving what they're seeing from the 23-year-old in the Packers' game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, Aug. 13.

Smack drilled a 58-yard field goal through the uprights on the Packers' first drive, though a roughing the snapper penalty by the Steelers put the offense back on the field and wiped away the three points.

After the offensive drive stalled again, Smack was sent out there again and made a 37-yard field goal.

And he closed out the half with a 57-yard field goal. His teammates and coaching staff erupted after the kick.

It's a great sign for Smack, who opened his first NFL training camp with much to be desired as he struggled in the first few practices. But he appears on the upswing following his Family Night showing when he made 6 of 7 kicks.

Maybe it was his chat with veteran kicker Chris Boswell before the game, just getting comfortable in his role or practice just isn't his thing. And he's just about kicking in stadiums.

Either way, Packers fans are in a frenzy over Smack even if it's a bit premature and only in the preseason.
