On Monday, the Jayhawks head coach touched on injuries to the cornerback room for Kansas just one month ahead of kickoff.
Austin Alexander underwent surgery in the spring and continues to work his way back. The redshirt sophomore has been looked upon as a player that will make a big impact but he has not been full go just yet.
“Austin Alexander is getting healthier, but really he’s been limited for over six months,” Leipold said. “Just when we were getting him back, he had another set back with a different injury, but he’s coming around.”
Along with Alexander, Syeed Gibbs is also uncertain for the season opener.
“Syeed Gibbs is another guy that has been slowed, and again, he’s shown an ability to help us out at the corner position as well as a nickel,” Leipold said.
As a redshirt freshman last year, Alexander totaled 46 tackles with two passes defended. Gibbs spent his first year at Georgia Tech before transferring to Kansas last season. He finished with 23 tackles and three passes defended. Both players are expected to be big pieces of the defense when healthy but until then, the Jayhawks will look at other options during training camp.
“We have a lot of guys competing and part of it, we’re looking for guys to be able to be out there everyday consistently,” Leipold said.
