Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero is still keeping a close eye on Barcelona, even with his expected summer exit moving towards Atletico Madrid, according to Mundo Deportivo. The 28-year-old Argentina international appears likely to leave Spurs, but the situation has not yet been fully concluded.
Romero’s name has been under consideration in Barcelona for some time. The report states that sporting director Deco appreciates the defender’s profile, while conversations have also taken place with his agent, Ciro Palermo. That interest remains in the background, particularly after Ronald Araujo’s departure to Liverpool, which naturally opened fresh discussion around Barcelona’s centre-back plans.
For now, though, Barcelona’s transfer priorities lie elsewhere. Their focus is said to be on signing a striker and completing a move for Rodri, while internally there is confidence in the existing defensive options. Pau Cubarsi, Gerard Martin, Andreas Christensen and Alvaro Cortes are all viewed as part of the solution, with Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde also capable of filling in centrally.
That context helps explain why admiration for Romero has not yet turned into a decisive push. Even so, Barcelona’s recruitment team reportedly value his experience, speed and ability to operate across the back line, despite earlier preference for a naturally left-sided central defender.
Atletico Madrid Lead Romero Race
Atletico Madrid are currently the most advanced suitor. Negotiations with Tottenham are underway, with Spurs understood to have placed a valuation of around €40 million on the player. Atletico’s offer, as reported, has so far been €30 million, leaving a gap to bridge before any agreement can be reached.

From Tottenham’s perspective, there appears to be a willingness to sanction Romero’s departure if their asking price is met. That leaves the door open for Atletico Madrid, while also preserving a slim possibility that Barcelona could yet act if their market priorities shift later in the window.
As things stand, Romero seems to be waiting for clarity from Barcelona before committing fully, even if the strongest momentum currently points towards Spain’s capital rather than Catalonia.
Our View
If you are a worried Spurs supporter, this report does little to settle the nerves. Romero has been one of the few defenders in this squad with elite-level aggression, authority and personality, and losing him would feel like removing the backbone of the side. You can accept a sale when a club is rebuilding, but only if the replacement plan is strong, immediate and convincing.
The concern here is not simply that Atletico Madrid are interested, or that Barcelona admire him. It is that Romero seems open to waiting and Tottenham seem open to selling. That combination usually points in one direction. When a player of his standing is prepared to keep options alive while the club negotiates, supporters will naturally fear the relationship is already nearing its end.
£40 million, if that is effectively the benchmark in pound terms, would not feel especially comforting either when the market for top defenders is so inflated. Spurs fans will ask how easily that quality can be replaced, and whether the squad can really afford another major defensive change. There is also the wider message it sends. If one of your top performers is available, rivals sense vulnerability.
For Tottenham, this should only happen if there is a clear upgrade strategy, a fast replacement, and a structure that protects the team. Otherwise, it risks looking like another damaging step backwards.
