Kilmarnock’s new £1.4million Rugby Park surface has been tipped to rank among the finest in Scottish football ahead of Celtic becoming the first visiting side to experience it this weekend.

The Hoops travel to Ayrshire on Sunday for their opening away fixture of the Premiership campaign, with the occasion bringing an end to more than a decade of top-flight football being played on an artificial pitch at the venue.

Rugby Park’s plastic surface has been a familiar feature since 2014 and Celtic have endured their share of difficult afternoons there over the years, particularly during Steve Clarke’s successful spell in charge of Killie.
However, a significant transformation has now been completed as Kilmarnock look to move in a different direction under Neil McCann.
The club have invested more than £1.4m in installing a new hybrid surface, a move designed to complement McCann’s desire for his team to become more comfortable in possession.
Jim McAlister, the construction director responsible for overseeing the project, believes Celtic will encounter a surface comparable to those being used at some of football’s biggest venues.
Speaking to Sky Sports, McAlister said: “There are other stitch pitches in Scotland as well, but this pitch system has been used around the world.
“Aston Villa has it, Chelsea has it, Real Madrid has it, and three of the venues at the World Cup – Vancouver, Philly and Los Angeles also had the same system.
“This will be one of the best pitches in the Scottish leagues.”
McCann is equally enthusiastic about the change and believes the new surface can assist his attempts to reshape the way Kilmarnock play.
The Killie manager accepts, though, that Celtic are unlikely to have any complaints about being given a pristine grass pitch on which to operate.
He said: “I think, when we’re on that pitch out there, it will help us – because everybody wants to play on grass pitches. I think the top division should have grass pitches, and that is a cracker.
“But we still need to be mindful that Celtic will enjoy it too, so it should lend itself to a brilliant game of football on Sunday.”
Kilmarnock will be hoping their Rugby Park homecoming can also provide an immediate response to a disappointing start to their league campaign.
McCann’s side were involved in a seven-goal thriller against newly-promoted St Johnstone last weekend but ultimately returned to Ayrshire empty-handed following a 4-3 defeat.
Work on the new pitch meant Killie were unable to stage their Premier Sports Cup group fixtures against Raith Rovers and Hamilton Accies at their usual home earlier this summer.
Those matches were instead switched to Beechwood Park, the home of Auchinleck Talbot, while the Rugby Park redevelopment was completed.
Kilmarnock’s decision to abandon their artificial surface also leaves Falkirk as the only Premiership club currently playing home matches on a synthetic pitch.
For McCann, however, the significance of the project extends beyond simply changing what is underneath his players’ feet.
The former Scotland international has made clear his intention to move Kilmarnock away from the more direct approach traditionally associated with the club and towards a style centred around greater control of possession.
Sunday will provide the first major examination of that philosophy on the new surface, with champions Celtic providing formidable opposition for Rugby Park’s long-awaited return to grass.
