Ben Roethlisberger arrives on the 2027 Hall of Fame ballot with 64,088 passing yards, two Super Bowl rings and a candidacy that PFSN’s Hot List refuses to call safe.
“Big Ben is not a first-ballot lock by any stretch,” the Hot List concluded while slotting Roethlisberger second on its way-too-early projection for the Class of 2027. Adrian Peterson took the top spot. Richard Sherman went third, Rob Gronkowski fourth and Reggie Wayne fifth.

Ben Roethlisberger’s 2027 Hall of Fame Case Splits Cleanly in Two
On the field, there is no argument. Roethlisberger’s 64,088 yards rank seventh in NFL history; he holds the record for 500-yard passing games with four, and he won both of his titles before his 27th birthday across 18 seasons with one franchise. The Hot List added a proprietary layer to that, citing 11 seasons with a PFN QB Impact score above 80.
The other half is uglier. Roethlisberger was suspended in 2010 for violating the personal conduct policy after a sexual assault allegation that produced no criminal charges, and he was ordered to undergo a behavioral evaluation. The league later cut the ban from six games to four. “As we’ve seen with Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick and other cases, voters will be more apprehensive toward these kinds of records,” the Hot List argued.
The evidence is fresh. Belichick and Kraft both missed the Class of 2026, and the selection committee’s revised structure, which cuts 15 finalists to 10 and then to seven before voters choose five, has produced classes of four and five in back-to-back years. A crowded ballot punishes anyone who gives 50 selectors a reason to pause.
Gronkowski and Sherman carry none of that weight. Gronkowski’s 2011 line of 90 catches, 1,327 yards and 17 receiving touchdowns still stands as the single-season touchdown record for a tight end, and his 92 career scores trail only Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez at the position. The Hot List pointed to a perfect 100.0 PFN Tight End Impact grade for that season, the highest its database has ever produced at the position, and framed the rest simply: “He has the spotless on and off field record to constitute an easy in for voters.”

Sherman’s case is built differently. He finished with 37 interceptions and 116 passes defensed, five Pro Bowls, three first-team All-Pro selections, a Super Bowl XLVIII ring and a spot on the 2010s All-Decade Team. “Every time a team falls in love with the 6-foot-3 cornerback in the NFL draft circuit to this day, they are trying to find that next Richard Sherman,” the show argued. That archetype is the case.
Peterson leads the list on peak alone. His 2,097 rushing yards in 2012 finished 8 behind Eric Dickerson’s single-season record, his 14,918 career yards rank fifth all time, and he remains the last running back to win MVP.
Reggie Wayne’s Eighth Year Is His Cleanest Remaining Shot
Wayne was eliminated in the reduction from 15 to 10 in February, his seventh straight year as a finalist and his seventh rejection. He is not automatically back in 2027. The bylaw that reinstates candidates applies only to those who reach the final seven, and Wayne did not get there.
“There’s a big bottleneck at wide receiver right now,” the Hot List said. “And after this coming season, you do have entrants like Julio Jones who are going to start to make some noise. So Reggie Wayne doesn’t have a ton of time left before things will complicate.”
Jones is not eligible until 2029, but the logjam does not need him. Antonio Brown joins the pool in 2027, and Torry Holt, Steve Smith Sr. and Anquan Boldin are all still waiting. Wayne’s 14,345 receiving yards rank 10th all time, and eight 1,000-yard seasons and a Super Bowl XLI ring still have not been enough to get him past the first cut.

“I think year number eight has to be the moment,” the Hot List said. If it isn’t, the math starts working against him fast, and Wayne becomes the receiver the committee kept meaning to get to.
