FSU's Tony White on Tom Herman: 'He's been truly awesome'

Mike Norvell and the Florida State football program made several changes to their coaching staff over the offseason. While most of these happened shortly after the 2025 season, they hired Tom Herman in July ahead of the start of fall camp.

The plan is to use him as a sounding board for the defense, giving defensive coordinator Tony White someone with an offensive background to bounce ideas off and learn how an opponent could attack them. White believes his addition is already helping, saying "he's been truly awesome."

"He's everywhere, you know, which is awesome," White explained. "It's good to have because, you know, he's been there and done that at the highest levels. So you want a guy who can tell you from a different perspective, like what's going on. So it makes you better."

Herman has spent his entire career coaching offenses, giving him plenty of knowledge he can use to help White and the defense. He was the head coach of the Houston Cougars from 2015-16 and the Texas Longhorns from 2017-2020. He took a few years off before the FAU Owls hired him as their head coach in 2023, a position he held for two years.

That experience will be invaluable for the coaching staff, and White admitted Herman helped him calm down after the offense had a big play during Tuesday's scrimmage.

"He talked me off a cliff last night," he said. "They hit a play, and I'm charged up now. I'm geeked the hell up because I'm like, we ain't about that stuff this year. And he's like, 'Hey Ton, don't worry about it.' I'm like, okay, cool."
