Mets Trade Brooks Raley To Phillies For 2 Prospects

The New York Mets already made a few trades coming into the August 3 deadline. On Monday morning, more trades came across the league rapidly, including another move by New York.
The Mets traded left-handed reliever Brooks Raley to the Philadelphia Phillies, keeping him in the National League East. The Phillies had acquired San Francisco Giants second baseman Luis Arraez just minutes before as well.

In exchange for Raley, the Mets are receiving two prospects, RHP Luke Gabrysh and OF John Spikerman. Both players were in High-A.
Spikerman is hitting .252/.423/.330 in High-A, and Gabrysh has a 5.14 ERA over 68.1 innings with 89 strikeouts. Spikerman also has 9 RBI and 18 SB this season.
Spikerman is the bigger acquisition here as he is the 27th-ranked prospect in the Phillies organization.

The Mets traded right-handed pitcher Freddy Peralta to the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday in exchange for three prospects, and they then traded reliever Huascar Brazobán to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday night.
The Mets' sale began with A.J. Minter being traded to the Minnesota Twins, and Raley was always expected to be moved due to his contract and his talent as a left-handed relief pitcher.
The Phillies land one of the top relief arms in the market, especially with Padres relievers Adrian Morejon and Mason Miller looking like they won't be traded ahead of the 3 p.m. deadline.

Brooks Raley was probably the best LHP remaining on the market. Gabrysh is an honorable mention in my upcoming Top 33 Phillies Prospects, and Spikerman fell off of that list some time ago.

For the Mets, it's another move, and the sale was expected due to their frustrating season. Spikerman, however, is a key piece to this deal, and a solid addition for Raley, a reliever who just turned 38 years old at the end of June.

Raley has a 5-5 record with a 1.96 ERA with just 15 walks, so he has been a very valuable piece of the Mets bullpen, but with New York out of contention, it made sense to move on from the southpaw.
Raley has also played for the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros, and Tampa Bay Rays before spending the past four seasons with the Mets.
Raley also has playoff experience, making nine appearances in his career, with eight of those coming with Houston in 2021. However, he went just 6.2 innings and had a 6.75 ERA during that postseason run.
The Phillies enter Monday eight games back of the Braves for 1st place in the NL East, but they currently hold the final Wild Card spot, so they are hoping the new additions can make a big difference.
