The Department of Home Affairs has urged South Africans to collect their documents as soon as possible. The unclaimed documents include Smart ID cards and other identity documents that are ready for collection.

Home Affairs calls on South Africans to collect IDs
Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber urged residents to visit their nearest Home Affairs office if they have been notified that their identity document is ready.
The department said thousands of people have completed their applications but have not returned to collect their documents.
Don’t leave your Smart ID behind
Schreiber encouraged anyone who still needs a Smart ID card to apply for one.
“I encourage everyone whose identity document is ready for collection, or who still needs to apply for a Smart ID card, to visit their nearest Home Affairs office,” he said.
Home Affairs said collecting identity documents promptly helps reduce backlogs. It also ensures South Africans have access to an essential document needed for banking, employment, travel and other government services.
