Will Vita Vea's 'tweaked' back injury affect his Buccaneers trade value?

Entering the last year of his current deal, Vita Vea wants a new monster contract extension from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers, largely because Vea is 31, do not seem to want to give it to him. In bog-standard "Disgruntled Star Wants New Payday" summer NFL news, this is why Vea requested a trade from Tampa Bay earlier this week. He would, essentially, like to go to a team that will give him the money he wants. In other news, water is wet, and grass is green.

Ah, but there's a rub. An injury that Vea suffered earlier this week could complicate matters on this front.

According to Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles, Vea "tweaked" his back during Tuesday's conditioning test and is no longer practicing. The mere fact that it's holding him out of practice now is worth noting for a guy who wants a big payday and who could find himself on a new team in the coming weeks. Because now, this injury could affect interest and leverage in any possible Vea trade, of which the Buccaneers have also yet to show a public interest in doing so:

For Vea, this is the worst possible time to get an injury amid his demands. Whether that's getting traded to a new team or getting the contract he wants from the Buccaneers, it's hard to sell yourself as an older veteran worthy of a lucrative payday when you're injured after failing the conditioning test before training camp. It's hard to imagine his value not taking some sort of hit right now.

We'll have to see how this situation develops and whether Vea returns to practice for the Buccaneers very soon.

What could the Buccaneers get in return for trading Vita Vea?

Should a trade manifest, a second-round draft pick seems increasingly plausible for Vea, one of the NFL's best interior defensive linemen. You have to note that Vea also requires a huge contract extension in any possible deal.
