Delcambre fisherman wins beer for a year after catching tagged redfish in CCA Louisiana STAR Tournament

ERATH, La. (KLFY) — A day on the water turned into an unexpected prize for one Delcambre angler after he caught a specially tagged redfish during the CCA Louisiana STAR Tournament.
Wayne Toups, who has participated in the tournament for nearly 35 years, said he was fishing near Redfish Point when he reeled in what first appeared to be an ordinary catch. After taking a closer look, he realized the fish had a blue tag attached.

“I caught a tagged redfish at Redfish Point, which was a color blue, which is for Ultra Beer for a Year,” Toups said.

Toups said the hot weather and slow fishing made the catch even more surprising. He admitted he almost overlooked the tag before deciding to inspect the fish one more time.
“I grabbed my phone and started looking at it and almost tossed it out. I said, ‘No, let me see exactly what it is,” Toups said.
Tournament rules require anglers who catch a tagged fish to remove the tag, release the fish if it meets tournament guidelines, and bring the tag to an official weigh station for verification. Toups brought his tag to Don’s Boat Landing in Erath, where tournament officials confirmed he had won.
“The rules are you take it—it was 17 inches long—so you’ve got to cut the tag off the fish, release the fish and then bring it here at Don’s,” Toups said.
After the prize was verified, Toups learned he had won a year’s supply of Michelob ULTRA beer, which he said amounts to one case each week for a year.
“When I looked it up and saw that it was Ultra for a year, I thought that might not be too bad,” he said with a laugh.
Although he’s already claimed one major prize, Toups said he isn’t finished fishing in this year’s tournament. He hopes his next tagged catch will be even bigger.
“I’ve got two yellow tags, which is a shirt, so I got two T-shirts, and then this one was colored blue,” Toups said. “But what I’m really looking for is the red tag, which is a truck or a boat.”
The CCA Louisiana STAR Tournament runs through Labor Day, giving anglers fishing anywhere along Louisiana’s coast the opportunity to catch tagged fish and compete for prizes ranging from merchandise to boats and vehicles.
