CHAMPIONSHIP BOUND: Jailbirds erase five-run deficit in semifinal win over Carroll

CARROLL, IA. — The Joplin Jailbirds punched their ticket to the MINK League championship series with an 8-7 come-from-behind win on the road against the Carroll Merchants Tuesday night.
Joplin entered the playoffs as the No. 3 overall seed following a 22-13 finish the the regular season, and is now two wins away from capturing a league title in the organization’s inaugural season.

The Jailbirds’ offense was slow to get going in Carroll; Joplin faced a five-run deficit before finding the scoreboard for the first time in the top of the sixth, when the Jailbirds plated four runs to cut into the lead.
Carroll put Joplin right back in the hole with a two-run frame in the bottom of the sixth. However, the Jailbirds’ offense surged in the late stages, scoring four unanswered runs in the eight and ninth innings to take their first lead of the night.
Pittsburg State athlete Landin Midgett led the way offensively for the Jailbirds in the win, going 3-5 at the plate while Missouri Southern athlete Drew Vonder Haar tallied a team-high 2 RBI.
The Jailbirds will face the Chillicothe Mudcats in a best-of-three series to decide the league champion, the same team Joplin swept at home to conclude the regular season.
The championship series is set to begin July 30 barring any changes due to travel logistics.
