“Universe Revolves In Dallas Around Paige Bueckers”: 2x WNBA All-Star Points to What It Will Take to Dethrone A’ja Wilson as MVP

During ESPN’s latest discussion on the topic of who can outdo A’ja Wilson to become MVP this year, two-time All-Star Chiney Ogwumike made a compelling case for the Dallas Wings star. Ogwumike argued that her late-game heroics have fueled one of the league’s most surprising turnarounds, where Dallas, after a 10-34 record last season, is currently 4th in the standings right behind Wilson’s Las Vegas Aces.

“Paige Bueckers is currently number two in the odds, and this is what she does, because she’s able to knock it down. She’s a certified closer…” she said in a clip by espnW.
“These numbers, these are crazy. Bonkers, okay? First quarter, second quarter, third quarter, fourth quarter, you can even add OT. Her percentages go up, not just in points per quarter but how she shoots the ball.”
“When you need a bucket – and the big bucket to win – she has been the determining factor. I think their surge from tied for worst, right, to now fourth in the WNBA has largely been because the universe revolves in Dallas around Paige Bueckers.”
The graphic she pointed to from the Wings win against the Seattle Storm made her point clear. She averaged 4.6 points in both of the first two quarters on 48% and 50% from the field, respectively. In the third quarter, she turned it up, scoring 5.1 points on 46% from the field.
However, it’s the finishing moments where she separates herself. Bueckers averaged an astonishing 6.7 points and 61% from the field. In clutch situations overall, she gets even better, knocking down 64% of her field goal attempts with the game on the line.
The reigning Rookie of the Year has multiple go-to moves, as Ogwumike highlighted in her examples, quickly knocking down contested jumpers or knock-down shots despite having multiple defenders collapsing on her. That’s why Ogwumike credited her for Dallas’ rise and genuine contender for Wilson’s throne as the reigning league MVP.
Wilson remains the favorite for now, leading Bueckers on crucial individual metrics like points, rebounds, steals, blocks and field goal percentage. However, Bueckers’ offensive brilliance and ability to back up her team’s late-game offense cannot be understated.
