Sabrina Ionescu leads Liberty comeback as they top Sky

At first, it looked like the hometown kid — Sky guard Sydney Taylor — would lift her team up to an upset road victory over the Liberty.
But a slew of Sabrina Ionescu clutch plays — a deep bomb, three-point play and four-point play — put her team in position for a comeback victory.

It appeared New York was still in position for a loss, though, on Chicago’ final possession as ex-Liberty guard Courtney Vandersloot found Kamilla Cardoso for a layup at the rim with the game tied.
But she missed, then inexplicably fouled rebounder Jonquel Jones and sent her to the line for a game-winning free throw. Jones split at the charity stripe, but that was enough to give the Liberty the win as teams entered the All-Star Break. New York came out on top, 95-94.
The collapse ruined Taylor’s homecoming.
The Long Island native scored 31 points on 9-of-17 shooting. She even drained a pair of free throws to put her team up eight down the stretch, which appeared to be too much to come back from.
But Ionescu, who scored 13 in the final period, pulled her team from behind. Ionescu finished with 29 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Taylor attended high school at St. Anthony’s in South Huntington, New York before playing three seasons at UMass and one at Louisville. He also logged three assists and three rebounds in the loss.
