NEOSHO, MO. — Local wrestlers ranging from all over the Four States gathered in Neosho to take part in the 25th annual Coach Phillips’ Technique & Drill Camp, featuring lessons and advice from current Oklahoma State University wrestler Cael Hughes.
The four-day camp started July 20 and concludes July 23, offering three unique sessions for differing skill levels: novice, intermediate and experienced.

“I always say summer wrestlers make winter champions,” Neosho head wrestling coach Jeremy Phillips said. “And so we’re kind of taking where we finished last year building off weaknesses and making some strengths.”
Phillips, an eight-time Missouri state coach of the year, hosted and facilitated the camp alongside a crew of experienced coaches.
Phillips said each year, he aims to bring in an experienced wrestler for the camp to offer another perspective to the local athletes.
This year, that wrestler just so happened to be Oklahoma high school wrestling legend Hughes.
Hughes is one of only five wrestlers in the state of Oklahoma to go undefeated, compiling a perfect 140-0 record alongside four state titles during his time in the high school ranks.
“I think it’s about just bringing all these kids together, showing them some moves and, you know, letting them learn some things about the sport and hopefully grow a deeper appreciation for it,” Hughes said on the camp.
Hughes is a redshirt sophomore at OSU, posting a 20-1 overall record with the Cowboys.
