World Cup Commentators Mix Up Pharrell Williams And A$AP RockyMEGASpain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina delivered a dramatic conclusion to the month-long tournament, but viewers were equally captivated by what unfolded in the commentary booth.
During the match, two separate on-air blunders involving A-list celebrities sent social media into a frenzy after commentators mistakenly identified some of Hollywood and music’s biggest stars.
The first came when cameras panned to Pharrell Williams in the crowd. A commentator incorrectly identified him as A$AP Rocky.
“I think that’s AKA Rocky, or ASAP Rocky, sorry, I think,” the commentator said.
Later in the broadcast, cameras focused on Matt Damon, who was attending with his wife, Luciana Bozán Barroso, but another commentator mistakenly introduced him as Brad Pitt.
“Brad Pitt is also among the fans here,” the commentator said as play continued.
Social Media Erupts Over World Cup Broadcast Errors
ZUMAPRESS.com / MEGAViewers quickly took to social media to point out the blunders, with many joking that Damon being mistaken for Pitt was “the best compliment a man can receive.”
“Matt Damon needs to take that compliment all day, every day,” one X user wrote.
Another added, “That’s not bad of a mistake, tbh. I’d be down to be confused with Brad Pitt. Huge ego boost!”
Referencing Christopher Nolan’s newly released epic, in which Damon plays Odysseus, one user quipped, “When Odysseus is gone for 20 years no one remembers you.”
Williams’ mix-up, however, prompted a much different reaction.
“This is why there HAS to be someone in every single industry that understands BLACK CULTURE,” one X user wrote.
Another added, “Not him correcting himself and apologizing, but still wrong,” alongside a laughing emoji. “Close enough lad.”
Trump Draws Fresh Backlash During Trophy Ceremony
The celebrity mix-ups weren’t the night’s only talking point. President Donald Trump attended his first match of the tournament after White House sources confirmed his appearance.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino had previously announced that Trump would join him in presenting the World Cup trophy to the champions.
However, Trump drew widespread criticism after remaining on stage following the trophy presentation, overshadowing Spain’s celebrations instead of stepping aside.
Infantino could even be seen attempting to usher him away so the Spanish players could celebrate, but Trump remained in place, smiling as the team lifted the trophy around him.
World Cup Crowd Turns On Trump And Infantino
ZUMAPRESS.com / MEGATrump made a dramatic entrance as Marine One flew over the stadium roughly 45 minutes before kickoff.
He watched the final from a glass-enclosed VIP suite alongside Infantino, Spain’s King Felipe VI, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
When Trump briefly appeared on the stadium’s big screen, scattered boos could be heard around the venue, though they were less intense than the reception he received during Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs, according to The Guardian.
The loudest reaction came during the medal and trophy presentation, when Trump and Infantino were met with sustained boos and jeers from large sections of the crowd.
Trump Repeated The Same Trophy Ceremony Move
Trump made a similar appearance last year after Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the FIFA Club World Cup final.
At the time, Chelsea captain Reece James appeared visibly puzzled as Trump remained on stage while the players celebrated, according to the BBC.
“They told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage, and I thought that he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay,” James said. “He just congratulated me and the team for lifting the trophy and told us to enjoy the moment.”
Chelsea star Cole Palmer admitted he was equally surprised.
“I knew he was going to be there,” Palmer said, “but I didn’t know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy.”
“I was a bit confused, yes,” he added.
