Class B Legion playoff roundup for July 22: Parkston rallies back for Region 4B semifinal win over Tabor

Jul. 22—MENNO, S.D. — After trailing 5-0 in the first inning, Parkston Post 194 rallied back to a 7-5 victory over Tabor Post 183 to send them into the American Legion Region 4B title series on Wednesday.

With the win, Parkston (20-9) remains unbeaten in the Region 4B tournament and awaits its 2 p.m. matchup for Thursday's championship series where they will have two games to win one to send them into the Class B Legion state tournament July 31 through Aug. 4 in Madison.

Tabor packed the first punch with a 5-run first inning, but Parkston tallied two runs in the third, one in the fourth and four more in the fifth to score seven unanswered runs, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Carson Bueber to take the two-run lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Parkston was led by the bat of Jaxx Kurtenbach, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Kash Neugebauer and Bueber each had one hit and two RBIs. Grady Bowar earned the pitching victory after allowing two hits and zero runs with one strikeout in 2 2/3 innings of work in relief for Brycen Bruening, who allowed five runs and six hits with three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings pitched.

Tabor was paced offensively by Cooper Mudder, who had three hits and two RBIs, while Isaiah Crownover and Owen Bures added one hit and one RBI apiece. Madden Merkwan was tagged with the loss on the bump, surrendering seven hits and seven runs with six strikeouts in five innings pitched.

Belle Fourche downs host Chamberlain in Region 7B

CHAMBERLAIN, S.D. — Belle Fourche Post 32 advanced into the American Legion baseball Region 7B championship series with a 14-3 victory over host Chamberlain Post 3 in six innings on Wednesday.

Belle Fourche capitalized on 14 walks issued from Chamberlain's pitching staff, and tacked on nine runs across the final two innings to score its 10th win of the season. With the win, Belle Fourche remains unbeaten in Region 7B and Chamberlain will play the winner of Winner/Colome or Martin at 6:30 p.m. in the elimination game to see who will face Belle Fourche in the title series.

Belle Fourche's Raif Parmeter led the way offensively with two hits, three RBIs and three runs scored, and Daven Kracht added two RBIs. Urijah Hamilton went the full six innings for the win on bump after surrendering three runs on five hits with eight strikeouts.

For Chamberlain, Issac Shepherd paced the bats with two hits and two runs scored, while Frederick Vanderley added one hit and one RBI. Cannon Speer was issued the pitching loss, surrendering eight runs (four earned) on four hits with eight walks issued plus seven strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings of work.

Belle Fourche (10-17) awaits the winner of Chamberlain or Winner/Colome and Martin in the Region 7B title series with Game 1 scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday in Chamberlain. If necessary, Game 2 is slated for 30 minutes after Game 1 is complete.

Dell Rapids fends off Colton in Region 2B

SIOUX FALLS — Dell Rapids Post 65 remained unbeaten on Wednesday after fending off Colton Post 206 on Wednesday 7-4 in the American Legion baseball Region 2B tournament winner's bracket at Ronken Field.

With the game tied at 4-all heading into the top of the seventh inning, Dell Rapids scored three runs in the frame to steal the win from Colton and send them into the Region 2B tournament series with Game 1 scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday in Sioux Falls.

Kenny Swanson led Dell Rapids' offense with two hits and one RBI, while Gauge Bunkers earned the pitching win in relief, allowing one hit and one run in three innings of work.

Coton's Denton Bicknase led the way at the plate with two hits and one RBI, as Mason Hemme added one hit and two RBIs. Alex Wingen was tagged with the pitching loss after surrendering seven runs and six hits with nine strikeouts and four walks issued in 6 1/3 innings of work.

Colton (14-10) will play the winner of host Sioux Falls Post 911 or Castlewood Post 240 in an elimination game at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Ronken Field for a chance in the championship series against Dell Rapids.

Garretson shuts out Hartford/Humboldt in Region 5B

HUMBOLDT, S.D. — Garretson Post 23 shutout host Hartford/Humboldt Post 62/118 in the American Legion baseball Region 5B tournament winner's bracket 4-0 on Wednesday.

Garretson's Cole Jessen earned the pitching victory after allowing just four hits and zero runs through 6 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts, as Jack Adler came in relief for the final two outs. Jessen also helped himself out at the plate and led Garretson with two hits and one run scored.

For H/H, Cooper Ball paced the team offensively with two hits, while Aiden Lueth was issued the loss on the bump after surrendering three runs on five hits with four walks issued and five strikeouts in six innings pitched.

Garretson (8-13) advances into the Region 5B championship series, and Game 1 is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday in Humboldt. Hartford/Humboldt Post 62/118 (4-10) will play the winner of Salem or Alexandria in the elimination bracket at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Humboldt for a spot in the championship series against Garretson on Thursday.
