Right now, the Boston Red Sox are in the midst of a potential franchise record-breaking run, as they have won 14 games in a row, and are now 51-48. They’re firmly in the Wild Card race, and if they continue this dominance until the trade deadline, they will be buyers.

With that in mind, Boston should already be exploring possible trade targets, even if teams haven’t declared their deadline position yet. Right now, catcher is one of their weakest positions, and a guy like Athletics All-Star Shea Langeliers could be the solution.
Langeliers would be perfect in Boston

Langeliers profiles as an amazing hitter for Boston. He’s in a second year of greatness behind and at the plate, as he is slashing .260/.329/.490/.820 with 18 doubles, 22 home runs, and 50 RBI in 90 games.
His swing is also built for Fenway Park, as he is a righty with a pull tendency, allowing for him to abuse the Green Monster for Doubles and homers.
A’s aren’t too keen on trading him

However, there’s a big problem in trading him: his team control. The A’s have him under their thumbs through 2028, which will be their first season in Las Vegas, where they will presumably “start trying”.
Also, even though ESPN’s MLB insider Jeff Passan has the Red Sox as a top landing spot for Langeliers, he only has a 10% chance of being traded, citing the team control and Vegas.

Passan did note the A’s will still listen to offers, and Boston has enough to make an offer they cannot refuse. Right now, looking at the Athletics’ roster, they have an explosive offense, but their entire pitching staff is mediocre.
On the other hand, pitching is something the Sox have in spades, both in their farm and on their major league roster. Young arms like Jake Bennett and Connelly Early, who have proven themselves to be ace and star-level starting pitchers, and top prospects in Kyson Witherspoon, and Anthony Eyanson.
Boston could craft a package of pitchers that isn’t necessarily an overpay, but have the team control that would give the A’s a good start to building a rotation around in 2028. Early and Witherspoon would be the best first offer, and they could go from there.
Hopefully, Boston starts up the conversation, and just sees where it goes.
