Soto, Holmes Give Mets Good News For This Weekend

The New York Mets are still dealing with the fallout from the SNY report that they’re now “open for business," but the Mets did get a couple of bits of good news going into the rest of their weekend series against the Philadelphia series.

The first news is about outfielder Juan Soto, who left Thursday night’s 4-1 win with what was described as left calf soreness. Soto showed no active symptoms despite spending the entire night on the base paths as he singled and walked three times, but according to a report from Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, the issue is insignificant and Soto isn’t expected to miss time.

“We think he’s going to be fine,” interim manager Andy Green said. “Just given that he played the All-Star Game, came through a lot of activity the last few days, it made sense just to get him off his feet. I think our expectation is he’s playing this weekend. … We were in a spot where he could have kept going. It just didn’t make sense.”

It certainly doesn’t make any sense to take risks with Soto, but the Mets definitely need his bat. He went into the break hitting .290 with 21 home runs and a .967 OPS, and Soto played four innings and went 1-for-2 with a single, so he definitely didn’t get much of a break.

On the trade front, Clay Holmes is expected to make a rehab start for High-A Brooklyn today, according to a report from Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, who used sources that spoke anonymously because the start hasn’t been finalized yet.

Holmes is a possible trade piece who was pitching well before he was hit by a line drive and wound up with a fractured fibula against the New York Yankees back in May, and he threw a live bullpen session on Tuesday.

The right-hander has a player option for $12 million, and he’s also been lobbying for an extension after posting a 2.39 ERA over his first nine starts. Multiple teams are expected to send scouts to Holmes’ start in anticipation of a possible trade.

Meanwhile, the furor over a possible trade of shortstop Francisco Lindor seems to be dying down, with the Mets saying it’s “very unlikely” and those close to Lindor saying it’s not going to happen. Lindor’s name flashed in trade rumors when the Mets left him off their list of untouchable players this week.
