Halton Regional Police say 11 vehicles were damaged after a suspected hydro transformer fire in the north parking lot at the Oakville GO Station on Tuesday at about 4:05 p.m.
There were no physical injuries reported.
Both police and Oakville Fire attended the scene and the images of burnt-out and blackened cars behind yellow police tape were captured on social media.
“(There were) reports of a hydro transformer arcing in the north parking lot, which is suspected to have caused unoccupied motor vehicles parked nearby to catch fire,” a Halton police spokesperson said.
“In total, 11 vehicles were damaged in the fire. All of them were unoccupied and there were no injuries.”
Arcing is described as a high-energy electrical discharge caused by insulation failure, contamination, or electrical stress within transformers.
Two cars driven away, nine had to be towed
Police said that two of the vehicles were able to be driven from the scene while the other nine were damaged to the point they required tows.
Instagram user ‘Campandcity’ wrote about the incident on the social media platform.
“Just to clarify: I don’t know what caused the fire. My car was in that same lane so a police escorted me (to) my car and I was in a state of shock. I have been parking at GO (for the) last 11 years and watching this happen to cars in the same lane as me scared me. I posted what I saw and genuinely hope everyone involved is okay,” the user wrote.
