McGovern first signed for Celtic back in 2001,arriving from Enniskillen during Martin O’Neill’s first tenure as Celtic manager before going on to play for several Scottish clubs.

As well as representing Northern Ireland over 30 times, McGovern also enjoyed a spell in England with Norwich City where he helped the Canaries to the Championship title and a place in the Premier League on two separate occasions.

Armed with a wealth of experience of top flight and international football, McGovern began his coaching career with Queen’s Park in in 2024 and now he plans on using his experience and knowledge to aid the goalkeeping department at Celtic.

Speaking exclusively to CelticPlayer at the Hoops’ pre-season base in Portugal, the former Celtic stopper says that it was always his ambition to enter in to the world of coaching once his playing days were finished.

“It was always in the back of my mind.” McGovern said. “People always said to me that I would make a good coach, so I got my badges and towards the end of my career I was doing a bit of coaching.

“I was really enjoying the coaching more than the playing. I think that sort of tells its own story, and that was the reason why I decided to retire from playing and go in to coaching full time.

‘I wanted to go in to coaching to pass on my knowledge and try to help other goalkeepers.’

“I was 23 years as a player, I’ve played at a high level and I’ve also been a number two and number three, so I’ve experienced a lot of things that you’re going to experience as a goalkeeper.

“That’s what I want to do, to pass all of that on and try to help make the goalkeepers at this club better.”
