Which 49ers rookie is under the most pressure to succeed in 2026?

· Yahoo Sports

The San Francisco 49ers walked away from the 2026 NFL Draft with eight new players, several of whom could factor into the roster right away. Wide receiver De'Zhaun Stribling and running back Kaelon Black headline the group offensively, while edge rusher Romello Height and defensive lineman Gracen Halton give the defense a pair of Day 2 and Day 3 additions as well.

But the class as a whole has drawn no shortage of scrutiny. John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan's recent draft classes have faced pointed criticism for straying from the consensus board, and 2026 was no exception.

That scrutiny is now translating into real pressure for two of San Francisco's rookies. CBS Sports' Josh Edwards named Stribling and Black among the NFL's most-pressured first-year players in 2026. But which, if either, are actually under pressure this season?

The case for De'Zhaun Stribling's Year 1 pressure

Stribling's path to San Francisco was unconventional from the start. The 49ers were reportedly ready to take Stribling with the No. 27 pick in the first round before trading back twice, ultimately landing him at No. 33 overall. That was still early enough that many considered it one of the bigger reaches of the entire draft. San Francisco's front office pushed back on that framing, revealing Stribling was one of just 16 prospects the team graded as a "gold helmet" player league-wide.

Despite the noise, the pressure on Stribling may be more perception than reality once the season starts. With Mike Evans, Christian Kirk and Ricky Pearsall likely ahead of him on the depth chart, and Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle still commanding targets, Stribling isn't likely to be leaned on as an immediate difference-maker. That could take some of the sting out of an underwhelming rookie season, even if the pick itself continues to be picked apart.

The case for Kaelon Black's Year 1 pressure

Black's situation carries real stakes. San Francisco's recent history of Day 2 and Day 3 running back swings, including Joe Williams, Trey Sermon, Tyrion Davis-Price and Isaac Guerendo, hasn't produced much. Black has already said he wants to be the one to change that trend, but that relies on him winning the depth chart competition early and producing on the field.

He'll get a real chance to do it, though. With Brian Robinson Jr. gone in free agency, the backup running back job behind McCaffrey is up for grabs, with Jordan James, Patrick Taylor and Guerendo (who is recovering from a torn pectoral injury) the only competition standing in Black's way. James was the presumptive front-runner entering the offseason, but Black is reportedly flashing at practice already.

Black's selection was near-universally panned among draft evaluators, making him, in many ways, the more pressure-packed pick of the two. If he wins the No. 2 job and gives McCaffrey real relief, it validates a swing few outside the building believed in. If he doesn't, it's another middle-round running back miss for a front office that's had more than its share.

When do 49ers rookies report for training camp?

San Francisco's first-year players will all report to the team facility for training camp on July 18. The veterans report a week later on July 25. Training camp practice dates haven't been announced yet, but they typically start in the following day or two.
