Jul. 8—GRAND FORKS — UND has found its third goaltender for the 2026-27 season.

Alex Scheiwiller, who backstopped the Canmore Eagles to an Alberta Junior Hockey League championship this season, will round out UND's hockey roster — barring any unforeseen changes.

Scheiwiller posted a .921 save percentage for Canmore, earning

AJHL Goaltender of the Year

honors. He also was named the AJHL's playoff MVP.

Scheiwiller was previously committed to Mount Royal University, a Calgary-based school.

He will serve as UND's third goalie behind sophomore Jan Špunar, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference's reigning Goaltender of the Year, and incoming freshman Caleb Heil, a seventh-round draft pick of the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning.

Scheiwiller has dual Canadian and Swiss citizenship.

His father, Sandro, is Swiss.

Alex was born in Calgary and played most of his junior hockey career in the AJHL with stops in Okotoks, Spruce Grove and Canmore.

He had a two-game stint with Kamloops of the Western Hockey League in 2024-25.

Scheiwiller is 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, adding to UND's size in net.

All three UND goaltenders are at least 6-2. Špunar is 6-foot-3; Heil is 6-foot-2.

The last time UND's third goaltender played in a regular-season game was Jan. 14, 2023, when Grand Forks native Kaleb Johnson started against Western Michigan University.

Johnson had career-ending hip surgery later in his career.

Fargo's Zach Sandy, a transfer from Minnesota Duluth, served as the third goaltender last season.

This will be the first time UND has not had a transfer goalie on the roster since 2020-21.
