Since Caitlin Clark entered the WNBA in 2024, she has been at the center of multiple league-wide shakeups regarding hard fouls, controversial officiating, and more. The most recent example was Alyssa Thomas’s foul on Clark and the public fallout that compelled the league to release a public statement to protect its players. However, according to the most successful NCAA basketball coach of all-time, Geno Auriemma, the issue stems from the expectations that have followed Clark everywhere.

“I hope people listening can differentiate here. She never stood up and said, ‘I’m Jesus, and I’m coming.’ This was not something created by her. It was created about her by all the people in America who are delusional that think one player who’s not Wemby is going to come in and transform the league,” he said in his latest conversation with Richard Deitsch.

“Having said that, I do think there is some personal animosity in that league where people are going to take a shot at her unfairly… There are players in that league that would love to kick her a** every minute of every day.”

And Geno Auriemma isn’t the only one who believes that physicality has been used as a tactic to stop players like Caitlin Clark.

“We’ve seen these physical plays that have occurred, and they’re not just occurring to Caitlin Clark either. The targeting that has occurred is like we could reference Olivia Miles too…” reporter Annie Costabile said on the latest episode of No Offseason: The Athletic Women’s Basketball Show.

While Clark and Fever head coach Stephanie White publicly condemned the targeted threats toward Alyssa Thomas, for Auriemma it’s this section of the fanbase that continues to cause damage.

“Because the bandwagon and the fandom became so obsessed with the whole thing, it turned into a cause.”

In his 41 years, the legendary coach has produced several elite players who have gone on to dominate the pros. Many of them dealt with the physical defense that comes with being among the league’s best.

However, his argument isn’t that Caitlin Clark hasn’t been on the receiving end of unnecessary contact. Rather, it’s that every incident involving the Fever star has grown into something much bigger than the game itself. And in Auriemma’s eyes, that’s the real problem.
