The Dallas Mavericks are still recovering from Luka Doncic’s devastating departure from the franchise 17 months ago.

The six-time All-Star was in the midst of elevating the franchise to new heights before it stunningly shipped him, along with Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris, to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick.

Fortunately for the franchise, they recently signed a 6-foot-7 Doncic clone, likely giving them more confidence about the future.

“The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have signed first-round pick Sergio De Larrea. Per team policy,” Dallas stated Friday. “De Larrea (6-7, 202) averaged 9.4 points (45.2% field goal percentage, 42.9% three-point shooting percentage, 81.8%  free throw shooting percentage), 2.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 17.6 minutes in 23 games for Spain’s Valencia Basket last season en route to a Liga ACB Championship campaign and Liga ACB Best Young Player award."

"De Larrea garnered 2025 Spanish Super Cup MVP honors after averaging 18.0 points in the tournament to lead Valencia to their second Spanish Super Cup trophy in team history. The Valladolid, Spain, native will play for the Mavericks’ 2026 NBA Summer League team. De Larrea will wear No. 55 for Dallas.”

Before signing with the Mavericks, De Larrea was involved in a four-team NBA Draft that landed him (No. 25 overall pick) in Dallas, Koa Peat (No. 30 overall pick) in Phoenix (Suns), Melvin Ajunca (51st overall pick in 2024), and two second picks in New York (Knicks) and Cameron Carr (No. 24 overall pick) in Los Angeles (Lakers).

While De Larrea still has a long way to go before reaching Doncic’s level, there’s no denying that the similarities are there. From the 20-year-old’s knack for putting defenders in jail in the pick-and-roll before operating it to perfection to playing a slower yet high-IQ brand of basketball while taking opponents off the dribble in one-on-one situations, it’s easy to see why the Mavericks committed to snagging him in the first round.

Dallas fans will get to witness De Larrea in action with the Mavericks on July 9 when they face the Golden State Warriors to begin the Las Vegas Summer League.
