Moniak, Goodman Deliver in Rockies' Win Over Marlins

· Yahoo Sports

While Hunter Goodman has been getting attention (and rightfully so), Mickey Moniak wanted Colorado Rockies fans to remember about him, too.

Moniak went 3-for-4 and had a double, triple, and home run as the Rockies defeated the Miami Marlins 6-3 on Wednesday night at Coors Field in Denver. What did Goodman do? Oh, he just smashed his 27th home run and brought more joy to the Colorado faithful.

The win also put a stop to the Rockies' eight-game losing streak against the Marlins.

Colorado starting pitcher Kyle Freeland picked up the victory, going to 2-7 overall. Marlins starter Max Meyer game into the game with a 9-0 record, but the Rockies tagged him with his first loss this season. He's now 9-1.

Stellar Start for Kyle Freeland

Freeland worked five innings, giving up six hits, two earned runs, walked one, and struck out seven. In his 85 pitches, Freeland had 55 strikes to his credit.

With one out in the first inning, Moniak connected for a 453-foot blast to center field and gave the Rockies an early 1-0 lead. Miami, though, grabbed a 2-1 lead as Javier Sanoja hit a two-run triple.

The Rockies, though, had some comeback energy about them. A four-run fifth inning, helped by three Marlins errors, got Colorado back into the lead. Troy Johnston opened the inning with a single, and Kyle Karros reached on a Sanoja fielding error. Ezequiel Tovar hit into a fielder's choice, where Karros moved to second and Johnston was out.

Jake McCarthy grounded out, moving Karros and Tovar along to third and second base, respectfully. Moniak came up and delivered a two-run triple, pushing the Rockies into a 3-2 lead. Goodman followed and smashed a two-run, 418-foot homer over the left-field wall. That gave the Rockies a 5-3 advantage.

The Marlins committed three errors in the inning, which didn't help Meyer at all.

Joe Mack homered for Miami in the top of the seventh inning, pushing the Marlins closer at 5-4. Kyle Karros then gave the Rockies that three-run advantage again with his 458-foot home run to deep center field.

Big Win for Rockies

This was a big-time win for Colorado, even if it's not really mattering right now to the team's overall record. It does set up the series' finale on Thursday afternoon at Coors Field.

Goodman needs to be in the MLB All-Star Game this season. He's just been having a stellar season and his 27 home runs. Goodman on Wednesday night tied Rockies legend Larry Walker’s team record for most home runs before the All-Star break.

Goodman now has 11 more games to surpass it. Don't be surprised if he does it, too. Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer will make sure that those opportunities for Goodman will have those.
