Willson Contreras encourages trash-talking fan to meet him at Fenway after sparking bench-clearing brawl

· Yahoo Sports

It’s been an eventful few days for Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras. On Monday night he was ejected after tapping his helmet to initiate a mock replay review after being ruled out on a check swing. That incident was small potatoes compared to the one that took place Tuesday night at Fenway Park.

Contreras took issue with some trash talk being delivered by Washington Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli, who yelled “sit down, boy” after striking the ejection-prone batter in the fourth inning. Contreras wasted no time confronting the hurler and a tense situation boiled into a full-on benches-clearing brawl. This provided Contreras the opportunity to show off his skills in the helmet-throwing department—a move that will more likely than not be rewarded with a significant suspension.

After the dust settled, Contreras told the media that he just “snapped” out there, which reflects some self-awareness. He also claimed he apologized, though Cavalli said he didn’t hear an apology.

Quite obviously, being involved in a situation like this is going to heighten adrenaline and Contreras was still pretty locked in while exploring social media after the ejection.

Responding to a not-so-nice comment from a fan on Instagram, Contreras generously invited the tough-talking fan to come meet him at Fenway Park.

The rational part of my brain really wants to dislike this. Deep down, I know that players should not be baiting members of the general public to come down to where they work and say it to their face. And yet, I feel a begrudging respect for Contreras. People online play way to fast and loose saying the most outrageous things about pro athletes and every now and again it’s good to let them know that it’s not going unnoticed.

Contreras is a world class athlete and flat-out enormous so, yeah, it is probably a bit different to question his toughness when he’s flexing just six feet away compared to on the internet.
