The Blue Jays do not have to rush into anything. If they climb back into the playoff race, keeping Gausman makes sense. Toronto still needs innings, and selling too early would send a brutal message to a fanbase and clubhouse that expected more.

But if the standings do not change, sentiment cannot drive the decision. Gausman’s value is tied to timing. A contender looking for rotation stability may not care that he is no longer at his peak. It may be that he has postseason experience, strikeout ability, and a track record of handling real innings. That can still matter in October.

For Toronto, the return would not need to reshape the entire farm system. It would simply need to help the club get younger, cheaper, and better positioned for 2027.
