Newcastle revisit old target to fill likely Tonali void

Newcastle are weighing a move for Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha, a player Eddie Howe has admired for years.

Sky Sports reports the Magpies are interested in the German midfielder as they brace for the likely departure of Sandro Tonali.

The interest is not new. Howe came close to signing Nmecha in 2023, only to opt for Tonali from AC Milan instead.

That summer, Nmecha joined Dortmund from Wolfsburg and scored his first club goal against Newcastle in the Champions League.

A reunion now looks possible. With Tonali increasingly likely to leave St James’ Park, Newcastle see the 25-year-old as an ideal replacement. His blend of physicality, ball control and goal threat fits the profile they want.

The fee is the obvious obstacle. Nmecha has a release clause of around £73.5m (€85m), though German reports suggest it does not activate until 2027. Newcastle, given their recruitment model, would want to negotiate a lower figure.

A deal hinges on outgoings. Movement may only come if the £100m-rated Tonali departs, freeing up funds. Tottenham have already had an £80m bid rejected, while Manchester City retain an interest.

Newcastle face stiff competition for Nmecha, too. Manchester United are said to be intensifying their own efforts, with their German-speaking recruitment team having made contact. Liverpool have also been credited with interest.

The German has only enhanced his stock this summer. Nmecha has starred at the World Cup, scoring in the 7-1 rout of Curacao and assisting a late winner against Ivory Coast. Julian Nagelsmann hailed him as “world class.”

His pursuit reflects a turbulent window on Tyneside. Newcastle have already sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and missed out on Victor Munoz to Liverpool, while fending off Arsenal’s interest in captain Bruno Guimaraes.
