Could Mauricio Pochettino stay on as manager of the U.S. national team past this summer's World Cup?

The former Chelsea, PSG and Tottenham Hotspur boss is in his first job coaching a national team, and has been widely expected to return to the European club game after his contract expires at the end of the 2026 tournament.
But a report in The Athletic indicates that before this tournament, Pochettino was offered an extension that would take him through the 2030 World Cup.
However, the report says, the coach and his staff won't make any decision until after the 2026 tournament. That's in line with what Pochettino told reporters at a roundtable earlier this week, when he said he is "open" to staying with the U.S. but also not rushing to make a decision.
"Now we're focused on the World Cup," the Argentina native said. "Then, if we want to stay, we have months to talk, or days or weeks. Because it's four years until the next World Cup."
After finishing first in Group D, the U.S. will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup round of 32 on Wednesday, July 1 in the Bay Area.
While the 2026 World Cup hosted on home soil always has loomed large in American soccer, there are significant milestones approaching in the next cycle, too.
In addition to the Concacaf Gold Cup and the Concacaf Nations League, the U.S. also is likely to be an invited team to the 2028 Copa América, the South American continental championship, which may return to U.S. soil after being hosted successfully stateside in 2016 and 2024.
That tournament reportedly is working to avoid a conflict with the Olympic games in Los Angeles, where senior women's teams and U-23 men's teams with three overage players compete for the soccer medals.
Pochettino also reportedly spoke with AC Milan about its managerial opening this summer, though the Italian club hired former Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim.
