King Philip officials said Phinney was selected following a comprehensive search process that highlighted his experience in budget management, compliance with athletic governing bodies and oversight of multi-season programming, according to the announcement.
Phinney has worked in Millis Public Schools since 2009, starting as a special education paraprofessional before becoming a health and wellness teacher and later leading the district’s athletic department.
Before transitioning into education, Phinney worked in professional and junior hockey, including serving as a general manager at the junior level, according to the announcement. His experience also includes collaborating with NHLPA-certified agents on talent evaluation and contract negotiations across multiple leagues.
He holds a master's degree in special education from Framingham State University and a bachelor of science degree in sports management from UMass Amherst. He is also a registered athletic administrator through the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.
Phinney replaces Gary Brown as athletic director
At King Philip, Phinney replaces Gary Brown, who is stepping down after nine years.
"Mr. Brown served our King Philip Regional School District well for nine years," said Superintendent of Schools Rich Drolet, in a statement. "He helped add Unified Sports, support our teams toward numerous championships, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors."
District officials expect Phinney to continue development of the athletic program while maintaining a focus on collaboration and long-term growth, according to the announcement.
"We're confident that Derek Phinney will help to continue and foster the district's previous efforts to bolster our programs and also lead our athletics department with vision, collaboration, resiliency and excellence into the future," Drolet said.
