Red Sox's Gray Dominated Rockies in 5-2 victory

· Yahoo Sports

Entering Tuesday night's game at Coors Field, the Colorado Rockies had a lot of momentum with them after Monday night's exciting ninth-inning rally and victory. They knew that the Boston Red Sox were going to send Sonny Gray out to the mound on Tuesday night.

As it turned out, Gray was simply too dominant, striking out 11 Rockies hitters en route to a 5-2 win over Colorado.

Gray bumped his record this season to 9-1, allowing six hits, one earned run, walked three, and struck out 11 batters. He's been a shining star for the Red Sox this season, who have been scuffling through the 2026 MLB season a lot.

Sullivan Not Sharp for Rockies

Rockies starter Sean Sullivan dropped to 0-2 on the season. Sullivan worked five innings, giving up five hits, three earned runs, walking five, striking out three, and giving up a home run.

Matt Agnos came on in the sixth inning and looked to keep the game close. Agnos, though, worked three innings, surrendered five hits, two earned runs, walked one, and struck out one.

Boston used two relievers (not Aroldis Chapman on Tuesday night) to close out the win.

Nate Eaton walked and stole second in the top of the first inning. Wilyer Abreu tripled to center field, allowing Eaton to score and give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead. Boston added another run in the top of the second inning when Andruw Monasterio and Connor Wong walked.

Eaton then came up in the second and singled. Monasterio scored and Boston was up 2-0. But Rockies left fielder Mickey Moniak threw a strike to third baseman Willi Castro, who relayed the ball to shortstop Ezequiel Tovar to get Wong out.

Willi Castro Homers for Colorado

Castro hit his sixth homer this season, a solo blast, as Colorado cut into the Red Sox lead at 2-1.

Boston scored a single run in the fifth inning, followed by two more in the sixth to grab a 5-1 advantage. Abreu hit his 10th home run, a solo blast, as the Red Sox went up 3-1 at that point in the fifth. Then, in the sixth, Anthony Seigler singled to center field. An Agnos wild pitch moved Seigler to second base.

Eaton doubled to left, scoring Seigler and putting Boston in a 4-1 lead. Ceddanne Rafaela singled to left, bringing home Seigler and wrapping up the Red Sox's offense on Tuesday night with a 5-1 lead.

Was Another Late Rally Happening?

In the bottom of the ninth, with one out. Tovar hit his 10th home run on the season. It was a solo blast, but the Rockies got within 5-2. Colorado wasn't able to add more runs on the Coors Field scoreboard and that wrapped up a win for Boston.

The Rockies were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left eight total runners on base. As for the Red Sox, they were 4-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left 10 total runners on base.

Colorado falls to 31-49 on the season, while Boston goes to 32-45. Both teams are in fifth place in the respective divisions, the Red Sox in the American League East Division and the Rockies in the National League West Division.

The two teams will play a Wednesday afternoon game at Coors Field. First pitch is set for 1:10 p.m. MT.
