The Boston Celtics' search for frontcourt help has a name attached to it that keeps resurfacing, and it's not a new development.

NBA insider Jake Fischer reported Friday that the Celtics have inquired with the Minnesota Timberwolves about center Rudy Gobert on multiple occasions, including as recently as February's trade deadline.

"In reference to Minnesota's interest in White, which The Athletic's Sam Amick first reported Friday morning, trading him for Rudy Gobert would represent a clear salary match," Fischer wrote. "Sources say that Boston, furthermore, has inquired about Gobert before, most recently at February's trade deadline. Now I don't think that the Wolves are actively shopping Gobert, either way, but Minnesota is said to be as exploratory and open-minded as Boston when it comes to shaking up the roster around the team's clear alpha."

Why the Gobert-White connection makes financial sense but roster sense is murkier

Gobert is signed through next season at a $36.5 million cap hit with a $38 million player option for 2027-28.

White is under contract for two more seasons at $30.3 million and $32.6 million respectively, with a $34.8 million player option of his own for 2028-29.

A swap built around those two contracts would balance on the cap sheet without much additional maneuvering required.

Boston was caught lacking in interior size and rim protection during their playoff exit to Philadelphia, a problem Gobert, a four-time Defensive Player of the Year who averaged 10.9 points, 11.5 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 2025-26, would directly address.

But White has been one of Boston's most reliable two-way guards for several seasons, and trading him for a 33-year-old non-shooting center carries real risk if Boston doesn't also land a perimeter replacement.

Boston's situation is further complicated by the ongoing Giannis Antetokounmpo pursuit, where the Celtics remain one of two frontrunners alongside Miami.

If Boston lands Antetokounmpo, a separate Gobert pursuit becomes less urgent given the size that addition alone would bring.

Minnesota, meanwhile, reportedly maintains strong interest in White as their own pursuit of Antetokounmpo appears to have cooled.

Nothing about the Gobert-White framework is imminent. What Fischer's reporting confirms is that the interest from Boston's side has been real and recurring, not a one-off thought experiment.
