The United States is hoping their World Cup stay is a long one, but the group stage is already nearing an end.

After facing Australia on Friday, the Americans will prepare for their Group D finale to be played at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

After a rout of Paraguay in their opener, Team USA is fully expecting to play beyond the group stage. The U.S. has sights on a Group D title and a multi-game run in the knockout stage, but as is the case for much of the World Cup field, the path to making those hopes a reality could go through their group stage finale.

Here's what to know about the USMNT's remaining schedule in the group stage.

How does the World Cup group stage work?

While the World Cup has an expanded format in 2026, the group stage is similar to the way it was in 2022 and earlier. Groups are still made up of four teams and are ranked by a point system along with a handful of tiebreakers.

This time, the difference is more than two teams have a chance to advance from each group. Eight third-place teams will receive a bid to the 32-team knockout stage.

Group play is a round-robin format, so the United States faces each team in Group D. A win is three points in the standings, while a draw is one point and a loss is zero. Ties will be determined first by head-to-head results and then by goal differential and total goals scored.
