The 22-year-old had been edging towards a switch to Newcastle, but Liverpool moved decisively in recent days and are now expected to secure his signature on a long-term deal.

Muñoz, who is currently part of Spain's squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has a €40 million ($46 million) release clause in his Osasuna contract.

Liverpool have prioritised strengthening their attacking options this summer following significant changes in the forward line. The departure of Mohamed Salah has left a major void, while striker Hugo Ekitike is expected to miss a lengthy period after suffering a ruptured Achilles injury that could keep him sidelined until 2027.

The club also faces uncertainty surrounding Federico Chiesa's future, with the Italy international among the players who could leave before the transfer window closes.

Muñoz is regarded internally as a player capable of adding pace, directness and creativity to Liverpool's attack. His versatility across the front line and strong development over the past year made him a key target as the club looked to reshape its forward options.

The winger joined Osasuna in 2025 in a deal reportedly worth €5 million after previously progressing through the youth systems of both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Although opportunities were limited at senior level with Madrid, where he made four first-team appearances, Muñoz established himself in LaLiga following his move to Osasuna.

He scored six goals in 34 league appearances last season and emerged as one of the most promising young wide players in Spanish football, earning recognition at international level and attracting interest from several Premier League clubs.

Liverpool's recruitment drive is expected to continue beyond Muñoz's arrival.

Sources told ESPN that the club also admire RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande and Paris Saint-Germain forward Bradley Barcola. However, competition for both players is expected to be intense, with several leading European clubs monitoring their situations.

For now, Liverpool appear to have won one of the summer's early transfer battles, moving ahead of Newcastle to secure a player viewed as one of Spain's most exciting emerging attacking talents.
